What Happened on Humboldt Avenue and at the Sausalito Yacht Harbor
On Monday around 2:40 p.m., a vehicle facing the Sausalito Harbor area moved toward the water near D Dock along Humboldt Avenue. For reasons still unclear, the car suddenly accelerated forward and plunged off the edge of the boardwalk.
It landed upside down in about 10 feet of water. A passenger managed to get out before the car went over the sidewalk, and didn’t need hospital treatment.
The location of the car and the water depth made things tough for the crews from Sausalito, the Southern Marin Fire District, and a private diver who joined the recovery. They had to work fast and coordinate closely.
Rescue, Identification and Immediate Aftermath
Rescuers pulled the driver from the submerged car and got him to a hospital dock. Doctors pronounced him dead a short time later.
Chief Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding identified the man as Brian Thayer Mullins of Sausalito, age 76. During the operation, a firefighter got minor injuries but seems to be recovering.
The private diver helped secure the car and bring Mullins to a docked area for medical help. Authorities say they’re still looking into what caused the car to move into the harbor, and they haven’t found any clear reason yet.

What This Means for Marin’s Waterfront Communities
Marin residents from Sausalito to Mill Valley, Tiburon, and Corte Madera know the Sausalito waterfront can surprise you. Boardwalk edges and harbors along the San Francisco Bay aren’t always as predictable as they look.
This incident may have been isolated, but it really highlights the need to stay alert near boat docks. Tourists and locals come for the views of Paradise Cove, the harbor, and the lively marina scene that makes Sausalito such a draw for folks from San Rafael and way beyond.
Officials plan to look at mechanical factors, driver behavior, and the conditions around the harbor to see if anything stands out. Maybe something they find will help shape better safety measures down the line.
Meanwhile, people in Marin City, Larkspur, and Novato are keeping an eye on how Sausalito updates its safety guidance for boardwalks and harbor entrances. Nobody wants to see another tragedy like this.
