Beard finalists spotlight: Bay Area chefs and restaurants

The Beard Foundation announced its finalists on March 31, narrowing down the earlier semifinalist list. The Bay Area just keeps showing up as a hotbed of culinary creativity.

In the Best Chef: California category, three Bay Area chefs made the cut: Harrison Cheney of Sons & Daughters, and Sarah Cooper and Alan Hsu of Sun Moon Studio. Sons & Daughters moved to a bigger Mission District space in San Francisco back in November 2025, with Cheney openly chasing a third Michelin star.

Sun Moon Studio opened in Oakland in summer 2024 and snagged its first Michelin star by June 2025. Another standout, Michael Tusk of Quince—a three-Michelin-starred spot in San Francisco—is up for Outstanding Chef.

The Outstanding Restaurateur category has Srijith Gopinathan and Ayesha Thapar as finalists for their group, which includes Ettan, Copra, Eylan, and Little Blue Door. Eylan won a Michelin Cocktail Award within just six months of opening.

Kevin Diedrich of Pacific Cocktail Haven is a finalist for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service. His bar has landed on both North America’s and the World’s 50 Best Bars lists, and Diedrich has already picked up Tales of the Cocktail’s Best American Bartender award.

Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco is a finalist for Outstanding Bar. The bar even picked up a 2017 James Beard Media Award for its book.

  • Best Chef: California — Harrison Cheney (Sons & Daughters, San Francisco) and Sarah Cooper & Alan Hsu (Sun Moon Studio, Oakland)
  • Outstanding Chef — Michael Tusk (Quince, San Francisco)
  • Outstanding Restaurateur — Srijith Gopinathan and Ayesha Thapar (Ettan, Copra, Eylan, Little Blue Door)
  • Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service — Kevin Diedrich (Pacific Cocktail Haven, San Francisco)
  • Outstanding Bar — Smuggler’s Cove (San Francisco)

Winners get announced at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony on June 15 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Marin County’s food crowd will definitely be watching from Sausalito to San Rafael.

Why these finalists matter to Marin County diners

Marin’s restaurant scene thrives on its connections with city hubs and East Bay spots. These places help shape our local markets, wine lists, and those cozy coastal menus people love.

In San Anselmo and Corte Madera, folks who vacation near Point Reyes Station count on the Bay Area pipeline—from the Mission District’s latest to Oakland’s Jack London Square. These finalists aren’t just collecting awards; they’re fueling a push for culinary excellence that you can taste from Tiburon’s waterfront to Mill Valley’s farm-to-table pop-ups.

From Oakland to San Francisco: A Bay Area culinary mosaic

Sun Moon Studio’s rise in Oakland has caught the attention of Marin diners, who often cross the bay for tasting menus and intimate hospitality. The restaurant’s speedy Michelin win fits a bigger Bay Area pattern—small, gutsy concepts making a big splash.

Marin chefs have noticed, teaming up with local farms from San Geronimo to Fairfax. In San Francisco, Michael Tusk keeps Quince at the top tier of fine dining, and his influence trickles into Marin’s more intimate tasting menus in places like Fairfax and San Rafael.

Srijith Gopinathan and Ayesha Thapar, the Outstanding Restaurateur finalists, run a group that includes Ettan and Copra in the city. Eylan’s Michelin recognition for its cocktail program has inspired Marin’s cocktail culture, too, with North Bay bars in Larkspur and Corte Madera now chasing that same level of craft and storytelling.

Spotlight on Marin-friendly venues and how to experience the buzz

Marin locals craving a bit of Beard-season excitement don’t have to drive all the way to San Francisco. Spend an evening in the neighborhood bars or on the farms around Sausalito, Mill Valley, or San Rafael—you’ll pick up on that Bay Area vibe right here at home.

You don’t need to book a table in the Mission or head out to Oakland’s Uptown to find top-notch technique or fresh local produce. Marin’s got its own thing going on, and honestly, it’s impressive.

Farmers markets, creative local chefs, and cocktails that deserve a little recognition are just a quick drive away in places like Corte Madera, Tiburon, or Novato. Why not see for yourself?
