Redwood High’s Open Division Championship

Under the bright lights of the Northgate courts, Redwood High edged out top-seeded University 4-3 to claim the North Coast Section Open Division title. The Giants showed depth from Larkspur to San Rafael and earned a coveted NorCal team championships berth set for May 22-23.

The win sent ripples of excitement through towns from Corte Madera to Fairfax, where coaches and fans followed every point with Bay Area pride. Several Redwood players put on clutch performances that tipped the scales against a tough East Bay opponent.

In singles, Casra Afsharipour took care of business at No. 1 with a straight-sets win, 6-2, 6-3. Calado Fazal made quick work of No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1.

On the No. 4 court, Will Greenwald blanked his rival 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 doubles, Owen Adams and Josh Friedman pulled off two tight tiebreak wins, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), to clinch it for Redwood.

It was a day that put Marin talent on full display, with the North Bay helping tell the story of a region-wide tennis surge.

Marin Academy’s D-II Championship

Earlier on the same packed weekend, Marin Academy of San Rafael edged Maria Carrillo 4-3 to win the NCS Division II crown. The Wildcats’ path to the title featured a couple of dramatic finishes and showed Marin’s growing depth in a tough D-II field.

Jack Withers fought through a deciding tiebreak at No. 2 singles, beating Henry Nguyen 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (2). William Young delivered at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

The No. 2 doubles team of Asher Bram and Devan Grizwald grabbed the crucial wins Marin Academy needed to seal the title. That clincher had fans on edge, honestly.

Additional Marin County Notes

Spring’s here, and Marin County’s sports calendar doesn’t slow down. Baseball and hall-of-fame moments are on the horizon.

The San Rafael Pacifics will kick off the 2026 Pecos League season on May 21 at Albert Park. That’s a real homecoming, drawing fans from Sausalito, Tiburon, and beyond to San Rafael for a weekend of ballpark nostalgia.

Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley wants nominations for its Athletics Hall of Fame, focusing on the class of 2016 or earlier. It’s a nice reminder that Marin’s schools keep honoring their athletic legacies, even years after the final point.

From Novato to Fairfax, folks will keep an eye on the action. Marin County’s tradition of high-level prep sports keeps rolling, and the players who put Marin on the map—tennis, baseball, you name it—still get their due.
