Understanding the Strawberry Tragedy

Deputies responded to an urgent 911 call reporting gunfire at a home around 5 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. First responders safely made contact with a reporting party outside before entering the premises to investigate.

Inside the home, law enforcement officials located the bodies of former San Francisco Police Department Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her husband Kevin Mannix, and their adult daughter Katherine. Officials quickly confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to the surrounding community.

Investigation and Community Impact

A preliminary investigation led authorities to identify sixty-eight-year-old retired sergeant Kevin Mannix as the suspected shooter. Local officials scheduled autopsies as the Marin County Sheriff’s Office continues its ongoing investigation.

Ann Mannix was widely remembered as a pioneering figure who shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first woman to join and lead the SFPD’s SWAT team. Colleagues, including Police Chief Derrick Lew and Union President Louis Wong, expressed deep grief over the loss of a respected leader and her family.
