The History of The Rock

Established as a federal maximum-security prison in 1934, the facility was designed to house high-risk inmates. The island quickly gained a fearsome reputation for being completely inescapable until a legendary breakout occurred on June 11, 1962.

During this famous incident, inmates Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin executed a brilliant escape. They utilized an inflatable raft constructed from raincoats and improvised tools.

The Legendary 1962 Escape

The determined inmates chipped away at deteriorated concrete around ventilation ducts beneath their sinks. They cleverly used ordinary household items like spoons, butter knives, and a homemade vacuum-motor drill.

More than six decades later, this daring maneuver remains one of the FBI’s most prominent unsolved mysteries. There is still no definitive evidence confirming whether the men successfully survived their icy bay crossing.

Rising operational costs and severe structural decay caused by relentless saltwater eventually forced the prison to close. The federal government officially shuttered the facility on March 21, 1963.

Following the prison era, Native American activists belonging to the “Indians of All Tribes” staged a historic occupation. They claimed the island in November 1969 for 19 months to powerfully advocate for Indigenous rights.

Modern Tourism and Infrastructure

Today, this historic landmark is carefully managed by the National Park Service. It successfully attracts approximately 1.5 million eager tourists from around the world annually.

To keep up with heavy foot traffic, the site recently underwent a temporary three-week closure. This downtime was dedicated to a $1.5 million infrastructure project focused on repairing and replacing pilings on the ferry dock.

Public tours have now resumed following the successful completion of these essential updates. These updates ensure safe, reliable visitor access for everyone eager to experience the legendary island firsthand.
