An Evening of Strauss Masterpieces

The Grand Opening and Vocal Highlights

The one-night-only event on November 6th was expertly led by Music Director Eun Sun Kim at the War Memorial Opera House. This remarkable concert built upon previous sold-out symphonic programs dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven held in recent years.

The brilliant evening officially opened with Richard Strauss’s lively 1895 tone poem, Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks. Following this energetic start, talented soprano soloist Kathleen O’Mara took the stage to perform the profound 1948 composition, Four Last Songs.

The U.S. Premiere and Orchestral Innovation

After a brief intermission, the orchestra delivered the highly anticipated U.S. premiere of a brand-new Der Rosenkavalier Suite. This updated 35-minute musical arrangement was crafted by Philippe Jordan and Tomáš Ille after originally premiering with Radio France.

Unlike older traditional arrangements, this fresh version brilliantly utilizes rich orchestral colors to closely reflect the opera’s dramatic plot. Maestro Eun Sun Kim continues to expand the company’s diverse repertoire with unforgettable performances spanning major operatic and symphonic works.
