Novato’s Day-Long Celebration Schedule

Novato’s got a full day lined up for America’s 249th birthday. Early birds can kick things off at the Buckaroo Breakfast, running 7-10 a.m. in the Redwood Credit Union parking lot.

This community breakfast is a favorite, and it’s a great way to fuel up before diving into the action.

The Greatest Town on Earth Parade

Pre-parade entertainment starts at 9 a.m. to get the crowd going. The main event—the Novato Fourth of July parade—steps off at 10 a.m. on Grant Avenue under this year’s theme, “The Greatest Town on Earth.”

This parade draws more than 10,000 people from all over—San Rafael, Corte Madera, Larkspur, you name it. It’s easily one of Marin County’s biggest events.

Local organizations, businesses, and performance groups bring serious energy, showing off the community spirit that makes Novato unique. Families from Tiburon, Sausalito, and West Marin often make the trek just to catch this classic small-town celebration with a big heart.

Regional Celebrations Across Marin

Novato’s festivities are a highlight, but nearby towns host their own unique events, too. Mill Valley’s Homestead Valley Fourth of July Parade and Picnic offers a quieter, more laid-back vibe—great if you’re not into huge crowds.

Spectacular Fireworks Displays

As evening rolls in, the Marin County Fair in San Rafael puts on what many say is the best fireworks show around. The fairgrounds are a favorite spot for families from Fairfax, Ross, and San Anselmo to hang out and take in the spectacle.

If you’re sticking around Novato, you’ll find plenty of good spots to watch the fireworks that wrap up the day. Folks from Ignacio, Hamilton, and Bel Marin Keys usually claim their viewing spots early—can you blame them?

The Historical Significance

As we celebrate with parades and fireworks, it’s worth pausing to remember what we’re actually commemorating. The Fourth of July marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Back then, the 13 original colonies formally declared independence from Great Britain. That bold move set the course for what eventually became the United States of America.

Americans have lit up the sky with fireworks since the very first commemoration in Philadelphia in 1777. Oddly enough, Independence Day didn’t become a federal holiday until 1941.

Today, folks in communities from Bolinas to Belvedere, and Woodacre to Strawberry, keep the tradition alive. Marin County residents celebrate each year with a mix of pride and patriotism.
