Remembering a Legendary Civil Rights Icon

Huerta peacefully passed away at her Bakersfield home on Oct. 28 following a brave battle with cancer at the remarkable age of 96. Her passing marked the end of an era for grassroots advocacy and social justice in California and beyond.

Before planning your trip to Sacramento or exploring local things to do closer to home, it is worth reflecting on her immense impact. She co-founded the organization that eventually evolved into the United Farm Workers, cementing her place in history.

The Historic Fight for Farmworkers’ Rights

Working closely alongside Cesar Chavez, Huerta helped lead the historic Delano Grape Strike and the nationwide grape boycott during the 1960s. These pivotal movements drew national attention to the plight of neglected agricultural laborers.

Her tireless organizing efforts proved to be absolutely instrumental in securing the passage of California’s Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975. This landmark legislation successfully established collective bargaining rights for agricultural workers for the very first time in our nation’s history.

Later in life, she established the Dolores Huerta Foundation to ensure that community organizing would continue thriving in underserved areas. Her decades of profound activism earned her global recognition, culminating in President Barack Obama presenting her with the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
