Honor Marin conservation legends with a Mill Valley redwood grove.

Marin County’s legendary environmental landscape exists thanks to fierce historical activism that pushed back against corporate developers. While the region celebrates many green landmarks, Mill Valley currently lacks a permanent tribute honoring conservation icons Huey Johnson and Phyllis Faber.

Environmental journalist David Kupfer recently proposed transforming a county-owned grass patch near Depot Plaza into a pocket redwood grove. This initiative aims to bring the profound legacies of these two environmental titans right back to their home community.

Honoring Two Conservation Pioneers

Phyllis Faber was a visionary botanist who co-founded the Marin Agricultural Land Trust and helped draft the 1972 California Coastal Act. Her dedicated work bridged the gap between environmentalists and ranchers to protect over 55,000 acres of farmland in West Marin from urban sprawl.

Huey Johnson served as a grassroots leader who successfully stopped the massive Marincello development in the Marin Headlands during the 1960s. His crucial activism eventually paved the way for the creation of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The Case for a Redwood Grove Tribute

Even though both Johnson and Faber raised their families locally, their names remain absent from public monuments in the city. Implementing an urban forestry project here would finally rectify this oversight.

Redwoods make a fitting symbol because their interconnected root systems reflect the community coalitions both activists built. Residents are urged to contact local officials to advocate for this commemorative grove.
