Swimming: NCS prelims light up Miwok in Novato

The weekend at Miwok Aquatic and Fitness Center felt brisk but electric. Marin Academy and Terra Linda showed off their depth and speed as they moved into the North Coast Section Championships.

Prelims set up a crowded Saturday night in Novato. Several MCAL swimmers grabbed A-final slots, while others helped create a strong team showing for Marin County.

Marin Academy swimmers shine

  • Cameron Forbes led the girls’ 200 free with a 1:49.33. She also earned an A-final berth in the 100 back (54.84).
  • William Canori and Riggins Scheumann each picked up two A-final berths. Canori took second in the 500 free (4:23.68), and Scheumann posted top-eight times in the sprints.

Terra Linda’s relay depth

  • Terra Linda advanced both its 200 medley relay and 200 free relay to the A finals. The relay squad featured Rhys Garroway Myers, Cillian McBride, Jackson Wright, Hiro Chance, Nick Butler, and Jack Mathewson.

Broader MCAL depth in the pool

Other MCAL swimmers also reached A finals. Archie Williams’ Zane Schuman and Terra Linda’s McBride made the 100 breast final, while plenty of others filled out B finals as teams from San Rafael, San Anselmo, and Novato chased points before Saturday night’s finals.

Baseball: Marin Academy falls to Stuart Hall

Marin Academy took a tough 13-3 loss at Stuart Hall. The weekend also brought multiple swimming heats in Novato, so it was a busy stretch for MA athletes.

The Cougars found a bright spot late when Ben Perkins ripped a two-run single. That moment closed the gap a bit and brought some late-inning drama that fans in Larkspur and San Rafael could still appreciate.

MCAL Track and Field: Redwoods, Sharks and rivals race to the podium

The MCAL track meet delivered high-level performances from all over Marin County. Redwood’s Annalise Horn captured the girls’ long jump title with a personal-best 19-1, putting herself in the mix as a sprint contender as the season heats up.

Field and sprint events in San Rafael and the surrounding towns turned into a showcase for the county’s depth. Some marks really jumped off the page.

Event winners and standout marks

  • Annalise Horn won the girls’ long jump at 19-1 (personal best). She’s likely to contend in sprints as MCAL heads for the postseason.
  • Kishor Shah of San Rafael cleared 13-7 to win the boys’ pole vault.
  • Allwyn Suresh of San Marin took the boys’ triple jump with a personal-best 41-1.5.
  • Kristopher Villeda of Marin Catholic claimed the boys’ discus at 122-11.
  • Heidi Blechen of Archie Williams tossed a winning 94-7 in the girls’ discus.
  • Relays really showed off the county’s depth: Redwood won the girls 4×800 in 9:52.40, and San Marin took the boys 4×800 in 8:31.39.

Volleyball NCS action: upsets and close calls

The volleyball slate brought plenty of excitement as the NCS brackets narrowed. In Division IV, No. 7 Archie Williams stunned No. 2 Contra Costa Christian in straight sets, earning a spot in the semifinals. That’s a dramatic turn for a program right in the heart of San Anselmo and Fairfax’s volleyball scene.

Division II saw No. 15 Redwood push No. 10 Acalanes to five sets in a gritty quarterfinal. The Tigers’ run ended there, but they didn’t go down without a fight.

All across Marin County—from the neighborhoods of San Rafael to the hills of Kentfield and the shorelines of Larkspur—the weekend’s results kept things lively. Athletes like Forbes and Canori made waves in the pool, while Horn soared for distance and both Archie Williams and Redwood delivered some clutch volleyball moments.

Marin County’s spring sports scene just refuses to slow down. More postseason drama is on the way from Novato, Belvedere, and the rest of the county as teams chase league titles and hope to represent the Bay Area on the state stage.
