Novato Arrest Highlights Financial Crime Concerns
Novato police recently caught a suspect in an alleged fraud attempt that could’ve hit local businesses hard. It’s another reminder that we need to stay sharp about protecting our community’s financial health.
Suspect Apprehended After Alleged Forgery Attempt
A 38-year-old from Sacramento, Hooman Beytollah, landed in Novato police custody after allegedly trying to cash a fake check. This all went down at a check-cashing spot on Grant Avenue, where quick-thinking staff spotted something off.
Mr. Beytollah reportedly used a false military ID along with the suspicious check. When staff caught on, he tried to bolt.
Officers responded right away, chased him down, and made the arrest. The Novato Police Department’s quick work definitely helped protect local businesses and residents.
Mr. Beytollah faces a long list of charges: resisting arrest, forgery, identity theft, passing a fictitious check, burglary, and obtaining money by false pretenses. On top of that, he’s got outstanding warrants for earlier alleged burglaries and using fake IDs.
As of Thursday, he was still in Marin County Jail. It’s a pretty stark warning about what can happen when you try to pull these kinds of stunts in Marin.
San Rafael Teacher Faces Serious Allegations
There’s a disturbing story coming out of San Rafael’s education world. The Marin County District Attorney just filed charges against a high school teacher, and the community’s feeling pretty rattled.
Allegations of Inappropriate Relationship with a Minor
Kevin Eric Allen, a 35-year-old drama teacher at San Rafael High, faces a misdemeanor charge for allegedly annoying or molesting a child under 18. If these accusations hold up, it’s a major breach of trust.
Investigators say they found evidence that Mr. Allen had a dating relationship with a 17-year-old student. Reports claim they spent a Saturday together and became intimate in his classroom.
The investigation also turned up sexual text messages between Allen and the minor. That detail definitely makes things even more serious.
Mr. Allen was arrested on May 20th. The school district put him on administrative leave right away.
He’ll be arraigned on Friday, and more details will probably come out then. Folks in San Rafael—and really, all over Marin—are watching this one closely.
A Welcome Sprinkle: Brief Rain Greets Marin
Usually, we brag about our sunshine, but parts of Marin got a little break from the dry spell on Wednesday and Thursday. It was a sight for sore eyes, especially for gardeners in Tiburon and Sausalito.
Rainfall Totals Offer Temporary Relief
The National Weather Service said several areas in Marin County picked up about a half-inch of rain during this short wet spell. San Rafael saw 0.55 inches—proof that even our busier towns can get a little boost from a quick shower.
Mount Tamalpais, a favorite spot for hikers and anyone who loves the outdoors, got 0.51 inches. Not bad for a single round of rain.
After this brief refresh, the forecast looks pretty dry again. Folks in places like Larkspur and Mill Valley should see partly cloudy skies sticking around.
A warming trend is expected as we head into the weekend. Eastern Marin might even reach the mid-80s on Sunday and Monday.
Communities in West Marin and along the coast will probably stay in the upper 70s to low 80s later in the week. So, after that quick burst of rain, it’s probably time to break out the sunglasses and get ready for some classic Marin summer weather.
