A pillar of Novato’s civic life honored by the City Council

Novato residents and leaders gathered to honor George Brenton Estes, who has dedicated more than four decades to supporting local families, youth, and civic life. Estes grew up in Novato after moving there in 1965, spent two years on an LDS mission, and later returned to raise his two kids with his wife, Ray Lee Davis.

He started working at Valley Memorial Park on January 26, 1981. There, Estes kicked off a tradition: Boy Scouts placing flags on veterans’ graves, followed by a ceremony and memorial service. That simple act became a recurring reminder of sacrifice and meant a lot to families all over Marin, from Corte Madera to Fairfax.

Estes’ service didn’t stop at the cemetery gates. He’s been involved with the Boy Scouts since 1984, including Troop 79 and a leadership role on the executive board of the Marin Council Scouts of America.

In 1997, the Silver Beaver Award — the highest recognition for adult leaders in the Boy Scouts — went to him from the Marin Council. His ties to the community only grew as he joined the Rotary Club of Novato in 1983 and served as club president in 1996–97.

After a remarkable 45-year career at Valley Memorial Park, Estes retired on January 27, 2026.

Mayor Pro Tem Kevin Jacobs called the tribute a reflection of Novato’s core values. Estes, looking back on his years of service, said cemetery and funeral work has been a blessing and called helping families through tough times his “payday.”

He pointed out that cemetery work isn’t for everyone; it takes a specific skill set, a lot of compassion, and the ability to help families hold onto dignity while they grieve. Not everyone can do that, and that’s probably for the best.

A lifetime of service across Marin County communities

Estes has lived in Novato since the mid-1960s. He raised his family here, keeping close ties with Marin County’s schools and civic groups.

After his mission, he and Ray Lee Davis settled into the rhythms of working life in Marin. Estes’ career at Valley Memorial Park became a steady thread running through the region, from downtown Novato to the quieter corners of San Rafael, Mill Valley, Larkspur, and Sausalito.

He’s spent decades involved with the Boy Scouts of America’s Marin Council and Troop 79. Through these groups, he’s mentored Marin County youth in leadership, service, and outdoor skills.

When Estes earned the Silver Beaver Award in 1997, it really showed how much he impacted generations of scouts. Kids across Marin City, Fairfax, and beyond learned what responsibility and civic duty look like.

His Rotary leadership—especially his time as president—helped shape club service and volunteer projects. That spirit of service reached deep into Novato and the greater North Bay.

Marin County towns keep growing, from Tiburon’s waterfront to the hills of Ross and Fairfax. The story of George Estes stands as a reminder that one person really can connect families, veterans, youth, and neighbors.

For folks in Mill Valley, San Rafael, and everywhere else nearby, Estes’ legacy is a bit of a blueprint. Invest in the place you live. Honor those who served. Teach the younger generation to lead with empathy and service.
