San Marin’s NorCal V Semifinal Triumph in Santa Rosa

In Santa Rosa, the San Marin Mustangs pulled off a gritty road win. Miller Morgan put up 27 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and knocked down three 3-pointers in a 54-47 victory over Rancho Cotate.

That comeback stretch really showed what the No. 3 seed had in the tank against the No. 2 seed. Morgan’s big night fueled the Mustangs’ push in the NorCal Division V semifinals.

San Marin, based just outside Novato, started slow and fell behind early. By halftime, though, they’d flipped things around, trailing by just 17-16.

Anthony Elwell kept things steady late, finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Sophomore Grant Means chipped in nine points, five boards, and three assists, keeping the offense moving.

On defense, Kellen Dunning anchored the group. Jake Beisler and Joey Engler pitched in on both ends—Engler, by the way, recently led San Marin with 17 points in a North Coast Section semifinal loss to Mission San Jose.

Now, San Marin (20-13) will play in its first NorCal title game. They’ll travel to face No. 1 Mission San Jose (22-10) on Tuesday.

Mission San Jose just beat Weed 62-58 in the other semifinal. It’s a traditional Bay Area powerhouse, so fans in San Rafael and San Anselmo are definitely paying attention as Marin County chases a NorCal title.

Standouts and contributors

  • Miller Morgan: 27 points, 10 rebounds, three 3-pointers
  • Anthony Elwell: 8 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists
  • Grant Means: 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists
  • Kellen Dunning: strong defensive effort
  • Jake Beisler and Joey Engler: multi-positional contributions; Engler also a recent scoring leader for the team

Novato Spotlight: St. Vincent de Paul Advances in D-VI

In a separate NorCal Regional D-VI semifinal, Novato’s own Jack Ellis dropped 27 points to lead St. Vincent de Paul past Victory Christian, 73-59. The second-seeded Mustangs (23-10) now get a shot at top-seeded Redding Christian (27-3) in the championship.

That keeps a strong postseason run alive for Novato’s program and its fans around downtown and the Patricia Green neighborhood.

St. Vincent de Paul, riding momentum from Marin County gyms to the NorCal stage, keeps showing why Northern California high school basketball is packed with talent and local energy. That excitement stretches from Old Town Novato to student sections in San Rafael.

What’s at stake in the D-VI final

  • St. Vincent de Paul (Novato) advances to a championship date with Redding Christian (Top seed, 27-3)
  • Novato pride on the line as Marin County continues to prove its depth in the smaller-school divisions

College Baseball and Local Prep Lacrosse: Quick Updates

In college baseball, Dominican University struck early. Annabelle Burke smacked a first-inning single, and Kate Tobola followed up with RBI hits in a 6-2 win over Hawaii Pacific to kick off a doubleheader.

The Seawolves tried to ride that energy through the weekend in the Bay Area. Fans in San Rafael, Larkspur, and all over Marin County kept a close eye on the action.

Switching over to lacrosse, Terra Linda pulled off a wild comeback. They rattled off six goals in the fourth quarter to edge Justin-Siena 10-9, and folks in Terra Linda and Greenbrae definitely noticed.

Meanwhile, Marin Catholic ran into a tough matchup, dropping a 16-9 decision at Valor Christian out in Colorado. It just goes to show the different roads Marin County teams travel as the MCAL season creeps up, with boys’ and girls’ games set for March 19.

Coaches, if you’ve got scores, stats, or notes, send them over to the Marin Independent Journal’s sports team by email or through the paper’s sports Twitter feed. That way, fans from San Rafael, Novato, and beyond can stay in the loop.
