Sycamore Park Improvement Project in Glenn County Now Accepting Bids

The City of Willows is finally moving ahead with a major renovation at Sycamore Park. This public improvement project, long anticipated by locals, is now officially out to bid.

State, county, and local funding back the project. The plan will modernize park infrastructure, expand recreation, and overhaul the city’s swimming pool complex. These kinds of changes echo what’s been happening in Marin County communities lately, where parks are getting serious upgrades.

Sycamore Park Project Moves to the Bidding Phase

At a recent City Council meeting, Willows officials gave the green light for bidding on the Sycamore Park Improvement Project. For people who’ve watched public works projects in places like San Rafael or Novato, this is the point when things start feeling real—shovels in the ground could be coming soon.

The project’s main funding comes from a $4.038 million Clean California Local Program Grant through Caltrans. Glenn County chipped in $200,000, and $177,952 from Proposition 68 is set aside for the pool complex. This patchwork of funding isn’t unusual; towns like Corte Madera and Mill Valley have used similar strategies to upgrade their parks.

Improving Access and Walkability

Accessibility and pedestrian safety are front and center in this project. Contractors will add new curb ramps and over 2,000 linear feet of sidewalks around the park’s edge.

Inside, crews will replace about 2,100 linear feet of walking paths. These changes aim to meet ADA standards and make the park easier to use for families, seniors, and anyone with mobility challenges. Frankly, it’s about time—walkability is a big deal in towns like Larkspur and Sausalito.

Pickleball, Tennis, and Enhanced Park Amenities

Recreation trends are shaping the park’s future. Just like parks in San Anselmo and Greenbrae, Sycamore Park is jumping on the pickleball bandwagon.

From Tennis Courts to Pickleball Destination

The current tennis courts will get a facelift and a new layout. They’ll convert two tennis courts into six pickleball courts, complete with stadium lighting for evening games and more programming.

Across the park, you’ll also see:

  • New trash receptacles
  • New picnic tables
  • Better site furnishings overall
  • These details might seem small, but they make a park way more enjoyable. Communities from Tiburon to Strawberry have seen how little upgrades can make a big difference.

Major Upgrades Planned for the City Pool Complex

The most complicated part of the project is the overhaul of the City of Willows swimming pool complex. It’s not just a facelift—it’s a full rebuild in many ways.

    Structural, Mechanical, and ADA Improvements

    The pool area will see:

  • New concrete decking
  • Full pool replastering
  • Renovated mechanical systems
  • Modern disinfection and filter media systems
  • Upgraded electrical systems
  • A portable lifeguard stand
  • An ADA-compliant pool lift
  • A new pool house roof
  • ADA-compliant pool house renovations
  • New perimeter fencing
  • These pool improvements match the safety and accessibility standards seen in recent aquatic upgrades in places like Novato and San Rafael. It’s a big step for Willows, and honestly, it’s about time the city pool got the attention it deserves.

Timeline, Bids, and Summer Swim Impacts

Bids for the Sycamore Park Improvement Project are due by January 8, 2026.

Once the city awards a contract, construction should wrap up within six months.

City officials aren’t sure the pool rehab will finish before the 2026 Summer Swim Program. To cover their bases, the City plans to work out a contract with the Willows Unified School District.

This way, summer swimming can still happen. Marin County families have dealt with similar pool closures during renovations, so this approach isn’t exactly new.
