Let’s take a closer look at some of the standout individuals and teams who’ve received formal recognition for their contributions. Their stories are nothing short of inspiring.

Marin County’s Volunteer of the Year: A Tale of Canine Companionship and Lifesaving Efforts

Gideon Bernstein, this year’s top volunteer, set a new standard for dedication. His commitment to the Marin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) team is downright heroic.

Gideon Bernstein and K9 Bruce: A Partnership for Good

Since 2018, Gideon Bernstein has become a key part of the SAR program. He’s made a difference not just in Marin County, but across the Bay Area.

In just one year, he logged a staggering 900 hours and went out on more than 70 missions. That’s some serious dedication.

This past year, Bernstein and his K9 partner, Bruce, played a major role in a life-saving search in Sonoma County. Their skills and training—thanks in part to the California Rescue Dog Association—really showed.

Bernstein doesn’t just help in the field. He also coordinates training for about 120 volunteers and leads fundraising efforts for the unit.

In 2024, he was elected bootcamp manager, showing his commitment to mentoring new search and rescue team members. Bruce, his loyal canine sidekick, even got a formal commendation at the awards ceremony.

Imagine training a dog to do such critical work, then seeing that partnership save lives—from Marin’s hills to Sonoma’s vineyards. It just makes you appreciate the bond between handler and dog that much more.

Recognizing Future Leaders: Marin’s Interns of the Year

Marin’s future looks bright, thanks to the motivated interns who bring fresh energy and ideas to county departments.

Max Gehm: A Path Forged in Public Service

Max Gehm earned the title of Marin County’s Intern of the Year. His work across several county departments made a real impact.

During his internship at the Public Defender’s Office in San Rafael, Max discovered a passion for law. That experience inspired him to pursue law school and a career serving the public.

His drive to understand the legal system here in Marin is pretty inspiring, honestly.

District 2 Intern Team: Engaging in Civic Dialogue

Eight students make up the District 2 Intern Team, working closely with Supervisor Brian Colbert. They’ve been named Intern Team of the Year.

Their research and presentations to the Board of Supervisors tackled some tough county issues. They also visited the State Capitol in Sacramento, meeting Assemblymember Damon Connolly and learning about state government.

It’s exciting to see young people so engaged in local government, from Sausalito all the way up to Novato.

Community Champions: Volunteer Teams Making a Difference

Several volunteer teams have pooled their talents to make a big difference in Marin County. Their combined skills really add up.

The Financial Abuse Specialist Team: Shielding Our Seniors

The Financial Abuse Specialist Team received the Volunteer Team of the Year award for their work protecting Marin’s seniors from financial scams. This group of 15 volunteers brings together experience in banking, law, and finance.

Last year, they spoke to 20 different community groups across Marin and handed out more than 2,000 educational materials. They made sure to translate materials into Spanish and Vietnamese, reaching even more people.

Their appearances on Bay Area radio shows helped spread the word, empowering seniors and their families throughout the region.

Volunteer Fire Lookouts and Election Ambassadors: Dedicated to Safety and Democracy

The spirit of volunteerism in Marin County reaches into public safety and civic participation. Fire Engineer Bjorn Anderson received formal praise for leading more than 50 volunteer fire lookouts on landmarks like Mount Tamalpais and Mount Barnabe.

He’s played a huge role in protecting our natural resources and the communities tucked around them. Similarly, Elections Technician Elizabeth Iwamiya got recognized for her work mentoring over 40 Student Election Ambassadors.

These young folks, inspired by leaders in places like Corte Madera and Larkspur, are discovering why democracy matters. They’re learning firsthand how important it is to show up and participate in their local government.

People like Anderson and Iwamiya, along with their teams, have shown real dedication in towns such as San Anselmo and Fairfax. Their behind-the-scenes work keeps Marin County strong—though you might not always see it, the impact is everywhere.
