This three-hour Bay sail lets families dive into maritime history and soak in the wild views of San Francisco Bay. The Matthew Turner, launched in 2017 and sailing since 2020, gives you a rare shot at traditional sailing—on a modern tall ship, no less.
Event Details
The Father’s Day sail runs from 11:00am to 2:00pm on June 15, 2025. You’ll depart from Sausalito and spend the day mixing family time with a bit of maritime adventure on the Bay.
Location and Access
The Matthew Turner docks at 2100 Bridgeway in Sausalito, right next to the Bay Model Visitor Center. Free parking’s available in the US Army Corps of Engineers Bay Model lot, so you won’t have to stress about finding a spot.
When you get there, just wait at the pier gate in front of the Bay Model. A crew member will show up about 15 minutes before sailing to walk you through the security gate and down to the ship.

What to Know Before You Go
Being prepared can make the whole experience more comfortable. A handful of practical tips never hurt anyone.
Arrival and Check-in
Check-in starts 15 minutes before departure. Try to show up a bit early, since there’s a short walk down the pier and some boarding steps to handle.
The ship leaves right on time, so don’t cut it close.
Facilities
The Matthew Turner has a restroom on board, but only one person can use it at a time. It’s smart to use the Bay Model restrooms before you board—makes life easier once you’re sailing.
The Sailing Experience
The Matthew Turner isn’t your average Bay cruise. Sailing this tall ship ties you to old-school maritime traditions and gives you a whole new angle on the Bay.
The Vessel
This brigantine sports two masts with both square and fore-and-aft rigging. If you love wooden boats, you’ll probably appreciate the craftsmanship—plus, they’ve mixed in modern safety features.
The deck serves up killer views of Bay landmarks like Alcatraz, Angel Island, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Can’t really beat that for a Father’s Day outing, can you?
Family Activity
This Father’s Day event sparks memorable moments for families who love adventure. Kids usually get a kick out of watching the crew handle the sails or picking up a bit about navigation.
Three hours seems just right—long enough to soak in the sailing, but not so long that folks get restless.
Weather on the Bay? It can flip fast, even in June. Pack layers, sunscreen, and maybe some motion sickness meds if you know you need them.
The crew keeps safety front and center. At the same time, they make sure everyone learns something and has a good time—no matter their age.
