Sausalito Food Vendor Composting Workshop at Sausalito Woman's Club on January 15th, 2024

Sausalito Food Vendor Composting Workshop at Sausalito Woman’s Club on January 15th, 2024

The Sausalito Food Vendor Composting and Waste Workshop is an essential event for local food vendors, restaurant owners, managers, and staff. Scheduled for February 4, 2025, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, the workshop will take place in the Spinnaker Banquet Room. This free event aims to prepare attendees for the enforcement of two significant regulations affecting food vendors in Sausalito.

Understanding SB 1383 and Its Impact

One of the primary focuses of the workshop will be the state-mandated SB 1383 regulation. This law requires all businesses to implement three-stream waste bins for recycling, composting, and landfill, both in front of house and back of house. CalRecycle has already begun inspections and will continue these into 2025. Failure to comply with these regulations could result in penalties, making it crucial for food vendors to understand and adhere to these requirements.

Importance of Compliance

Compliance with SB 1383 is not just a legal obligation but also a step towards environmental sustainability. By segregating waste effectively, businesses can significantly reduce their environmental footprint. The workshop will offer detailed guidance on how to set up and maintain these three-stream bins, ensuring that businesses are well-prepared for inspections.

County’s Reusable Foodware Ordinance

The second regulation to be discussed is the County-mandated Reusable Foodware Ordinance. This ordinance requires all food vendors to use recyclable or compostable packaging for both dine-in and takeout services. The County’s Environmental Health and Human Services Department has already started educational inspections, with future inspections potentially leading to health code fines for non-compliance.

Educational Insights and Vendor Support

County staff will present detailed information on both SB 1383 and the Reusable Foodware Ordinance during the workshop. Additionally, they will provide insights into the Marin Green Business Program and the support it offers to businesses aiming for compliance. Representatives from Bay Cities Refuse Service will also be available to answer any questions attendees might have.

Vendor Participation and Product Displays

Vendors who sell compliant compostable and recyclable products will have tables set up to display their offerings and answer purchasing questions. This provides an excellent opportunity for food vendors to explore products that meet regulatory requirements and enhance their sustainability practices.
