MCAL Track and Field Championships: Marin athletes shine across the peninsula
In the heart of the spring season, MCAL pulled together some of Marin County’s best programs. Tamalpais High in Mill Valley and Redwood High in Larkspur looked hungry for team titles.
The event put a spotlight on sprint speed in Novato and explosive jumps in San Anselmo. Distance depth in San Rafael set up a tense atmosphere for next week’s NCS meet—let’s see who gets to Santa Rosa for that regional showdown.
Stars of the sprints and jumps
Marco Cleary of Redwood High tied his PR in the 100 meters at 10.72 seconds. He sprinted to a win in the 200 and grabbed second in the long jump.
Cleary’s big night showed just how much a strong group of Marin sprinters can lift a team’s whole day in San Rafael. In Novato, Myles Short of San Marin ran a personal best of 10.79 to finish second in the 100.
His teammate Jack Golan claimed the long jump title with a leap of 21’11”. Novato fans couldn’t stop talking about the future of the Mustangs’ horizontal jumps.
Meanwhile, Tamalpais High’s Finn Harrington swept the distance events with authority. He clocked a PR of 4:18.88 in the 1600 and finished first in the 3200 at 9:43.42.
The Mill Valley crowd roared as Harrington pulled away from the pack. Tam’s distance crew looks tough as the season heads for the post-season.
Distance dynamos and hurdles
On the track’s longer lanes, Tam senior Marley Cannon posted two big PRs to win both hurdle events. He ran 15.51 in the 110 hurdles and 39.66 in the 300 hurdles, then anchored Tam’s winning 4×400 relay.
In the mid-distance battle, Leo Berberich of Archie Williams edged Tam’s Atticus Siedman to take the 800 in 2:00.53. Branson’s Gian-Carlo a Marco finished a close third.
The Archies’ performance highlighted the strength of San Anselmo and San Rafael’s spring programs. Branson’s athletes kept Marin’s Novato corridor in the conversation, too.
Field-event notes and record-setters
In the field, Arturo Gomez of Terra Linda grabbed the shot put title with a PR of 43’2”. That’s a big boost for the San Rafael-area Lions and their growing reputation for strength in the circle.
On the discus side, Kristopher Villeda from Marin Catholic took top honors. Kishor Shah kept San Rafael in the spotlight by winning the pole vault.
The horizontal jumps brought some drama, too. Redwood’s top jumper and San Marin’s Allwyn Suresh both made big statements, with Suresh’s triple jump earlier in the meet showing off the county’s depth as the NCS finale gets closer.
These field results really rounded out the sprint and distance highlights. Athletes from Kentfield, Corte Madera, and plenty of other Marin towns all left their mark on the meet.
As the MCAL meet wrapped up Thursday, the top finishers punched their tickets to the North Coast Section Redwood Empire Meet at Santa Rosa Junior College. That’s a huge step for San Anselmo’s Archie Williams and Novato’s San Marin, who are carrying momentum from Tam, Redwood, Terra Linda, and Marin Catholic into a tougher postseason field.
With warm, sunny days rolling through San Rafael and summer-like air on the way, Marin’s athletes head to Santa Rosa feeling confident. Their goal? Represent Marin County well and keep their seasons alive under the late spring lights in Santa Rosa.
For fans tracking the journey from Mill Valley’s Tamalpais High to Larkspur’s Redwood, or Novato’s San Marin to Kentfield’s Marin Catholic, this MCAL chapter felt special. The meet brought together speed, power, and endurance from athletes training in some of the Bay Area’s most lively towns—Mill Valley, Sausalito, San Rafael, San Anselmo, Novato, Larkspur, and more.
Now, everyone’s eye is on next week’s NCS showdown in Santa Rosa. It’s shaping up to be a dramatic finish.
