It’s a tradition that blends creativity with a genuine respect for the environment, all set against the backdrop of one of Northern California’s most stunning coastlines.

Event Details

The 43rd Annual Sand Sculpture Contest kicks off on August 23, 2025, from 9:00am to 3:00pm at Drakes Beach. Registration starts at 9:00am at the Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center, so there’s plenty of time to get started before judging at noon.

Awards get handed out at 3:00pm. The event is free, and everyone’s welcome—whether you want to sculpt or just watch.

The contest splits competitors into three groups:

  • Children (fourteen years and under)
  • Families
  • Adults
  • Each category has three prizes for the most creative and skillful sand sculptures.

    Rules and Guidelines

This contest puts environmental care right up there with creativity. There are a few guidelines to keep the beach protected.

    Materials and Construction

You can only use materials you find right on Drakes Beach. Don’t pick plants or take rocks from the cliffs—those are off-limits.

So, you get to work with sand, shells, seaweed, and whatever else the beach offers up. All sculptures need to be above the high tide line and away from the cliffs, just to keep everyone and their creations safe.

    Planning Your Visit

The Sand Sculpture Contest usually draws a big crowd, and honestly, it can get a little hectic. If you’re planning to go, it’s worth thinking ahead.

    Transportation and Parking

Parking is going to be tight, no way around it. Carpooling helps a lot, and if you’re just looking for a peaceful beach day, maybe try another spot in Point Reyes National Seashore.

    What to Bring

If you’re coming for the day, here’s what you might want:

  • Sand sculpting tools (buckets, shovels, spatulas)
  • Picnic lunch and snacks
  • Water and beverages
  • Sun protection (hats, sunscreen, umbrellas)
  • Chairs or blankets for sitting down
  • Important Restrictions

Families are welcome, but leave the dogs at home—Drakes Beach doesn’t allow them. It’s a designated swimming beach, though there won’t be a lifeguard on duty during the event.

    Local Insight

I’m a Marin County resident, so here’s my take: get there early. Parking fills up fast, and you’ll want a good spot on the beach.

The morning fog usually sticks around for a bit, but it burns off by midday. When it does, the cliffs look incredible—seriously, it’s worth the wait.

The competition keeps getting more interesting every year. Some folks start planning their designs months ahead, which is wild to think about.

If you’re hoping to see the finished sculptures, aim for noon to 2:00pm. That’s the sweet spot before the winners get announced and the tide starts creeping in.

Definitely bring a camera. These sand creations vanish within hours, and you’ll want proof they existed.

If you’re new to sand sculpture, just watch the pros for a while. You can pick up some cool techniques that way.

Most of the regulars are friendly and will share tips if you ask. There’s a real sense of community here—it’s honestly what keeps people coming back every year.
